Sheffield Sleep Clinics Expand Diagnostic Capacity With Updated Assessment Protocols
Facilities across the city have added diagnostic slots and updated protocols for residents seeking assessments.
How we reported this
Sheffield sleep clinics recorded a 35 percent rise in bookings for overnight studies between January and June 2026 compared with the same period last year.
Residents report disrupted rest linked to shift work at local manufacturing plants and increased screen time after dark in homes across Nether Edge and Crookes. The pattern has prompted the city council’s public health team to highlight sleep as part of its ongoing wellness programme launched in March 2025.
The NHS Sleep Disorders Service operates from the Royal Hallamshire Hospital on Glossop Road, where patients undergo polysomnography tests that track brain waves, breathing and movement during a single night. Private options include the Sheffield Sleep Centre on Ecclesall Road, which added two new monitoring suites in April and now schedules studies within three weeks for self-funded clients.
Clinic capacity and costs
Health officials at the Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group logged 2,870 referrals for sleep studies in the 2025-26 financial year. A standard overnight assessment at the private centre costs £720, while follow-up consultations with a respiratory consultant run an additional £180. The Royal Hallamshire site maintains a waiting list of roughly 14 weeks for non-urgent cases.
Equipment upgrades at both sites now include portable home-testing kits that measure oxygen levels and heart rate without an overnight stay. These kits became available for collection from the Broomhill Medical Practice on Whitham Road in May.
Next steps for residents
Anyone experiencing persistent fatigue should first contact their GP surgery for an initial screening questionnaire. Referrals are then routed to either the hospital unit or the Ecclesall Road centre depending on urgency and funding route. Updated patient guides are posted on the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals website and available in paper form at libraries in the city centre.
